Natural rubber is extracted from special plants of the tropics, whereas synthetic rubber is synthesized from petroleum by-products. Most rubbers, when heated with sulfur along with accelerators, plasticizers, and processing chemicals, become hard as well as more elastic and resilient. This process is called curing or vulcanization. It improves hardness, tensile strength, tear strength, elasticity, compressibility, and abrasion resistance.
